About Us
The Brooklyn Mutual Telecommunications Cooperative is one of the oldest telephone companies west of the Mississippi River. Just a very short time after Alexander Graham Bell invented the phone, the “telephone” came to Brooklyn. It is reported the first telephone line in Brooklyn was installed in 1878. The first telephone switchboard was installed in 1900 with a rural line to the south of town being installed in 1902 and to the north in 1903.
On September 16, 1917, the telephone subscribers in Brooklyn met and organized the Brooklyn Mutual Telephone Company with a Board of Directors elected to represent the members and their interests. The members then voted in 2004 to officially change the name to Brooklyn Mutual Telecommunications Cooperative in order to meet new government guidelines.
This institution is an Equal Opportunity Provider.
